Little Andromeda Theatre, Christchurch
From the Promo:
PLAY depicts the modern world of gay dating, with all the haughtiness, hilarity, and heartbreak. One’s polyamorous, the second is monogamous, and the third wants an open relationship – it’s the worst kind of love triangle!
Rich is a playwright struggling with modern-day dating and commitment. Fear of missing out on the smorgasbord of other delicious men, Rich must come to terms with what he wants and what he thinks he wants.
A contemporary play set in New Zealand, PLAY promises to be a night of heartfelt laughs, with a side of a gut punch.
Is one person ever enough?

Franciska's Review:
Following a somewhat cringe-worthy start, PLAY turned out to be a fabulously hilarious introduction to Christchurch's indie theatre scene.
PLAY is a play about a playwright, who's (apparently autobiographical) play is performed during the play. Leaving you wondering whether PLAY too may be somewhat autobiographical. Irrespective, I smiled as I recognised so much of the dialogue as it unfolded. And I'm neither gay nor polyamorous. Go figure.
Anyway, I certainly thought the play within a play entitled PLAY (with obvious double entendre) was clever!
I particularly enjoyed the part where Rich is asked if the actor playing the lead character is straight "because the whole audience wants to know". (And indeed we did want to know!). I must say, its been some time since I was last kissed like that.
Similar to Auckland's Basement Theatre, Little Andromeda has an intimate, non-pretentious feel to it; and I expect to indulge in many more productions now that I've discovered this gem in the heart of the city.
