English Channel Challenge: Dunkirk

The small town on the French coast was the sight of one of the most famous crossings of the English Channel.

At the start of the Second World Wat, British and French troops were pushed by the Germans onto the Beach near the town of Dunkirk.

With nowhere left to go but the channel, most were evacuated to the UK by the Royal navy and small boats piloted by ordinary people.

The soldiers queued calmly under heavy bombardment, turning a military defeat into a moral victory for the British and French.
