Amalfi Coast Challenge: Atrani

The village of Atrani precariously perches under the shadow of a large forested cliff.

Its shoelace streets and alleys twist up the cliff face, houses so close together that friends can pass cups of coffee between kitchen windows and nonnas can gossip across the alley as they knead gnocchi or fill ravioli.

Atrani inspired M.C. Escher, who stayed in the village in 1931, its strange geometry finding its way into some of his most famous prints, such as the series of lithographs 'Metamorphosis'.
